Holi is a popular Hindu festival celebrated in India and Nepal. It is celebrated mainly in the spring season, on the last full moon of the Hindu calendar month of Phalgun. The festival is celebrated by applying colors to each other, dancing to traditional music, making sweet dishes and sharing love and joy among family and friends.
Holi symbolizes the victory of good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna used to celebrate the festival of Holi with his beloved Radha and other Gopis. There is also a legend associated with the demon king Hiranyakashyap and his son, Prahlad. To celebrate the victory of good over evil, people light bonfires and offer prayers to the god Agni.
Holi is a celebration of colors and joy. People of all ages enjoy the festival by applying colors to each other and sharing sweets. People wear white clothes and smear each other with colored powder, called ‘gulal’ or ‘abir’. People also make special delicacies like gujiya, malpua and thandai.
